Wearing mask has been part of our daily lives since the pandemic started early this year 2020, and although it is a necessary measure, it has also caused a lot of changes in skin health for some, prolonged use of mask can cause skin irritations, rashes, mask acne, facial dermatitis, itching and flares of rosacea, to name a few, we have had several customers reach out to us in regards to these issues, so we immediately started working on new treatment developments to help soothe, heal, and educate on a regimen to help prevent and bring the skin to its healthy state, it is a total life style change, but so worth it.

Contact Dermatitis, Rosacea, Dry, Irritated Skin:

Mask can make your skin sweat and drain out moisture, leaving the skin dry, at times itchy and irritated, some acquiring contact dermatitis, which can be an irritant or an allergic reaction to the mask itself, symptoms include, dry, itchy rash, at times scaly, could also include in some cases, bumps, redness and inflammation. Ensuring your mask is washed daily with a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic detergent, is vital, 100% cotton is best. Once you are done with your mask for the day, cleanse your skin with a non-foaming, gentle cleanser, a mild oatmeal creme cleanser or milk cleanser would help, as it will cleanse, but not strip your skin, leaving the skin soft and hydrated while calming. We recommend cleansing twice a day, followed by an intensive non-comedogenic moisturizing creme.

Mask Acne:

Prolonged use of mask can cause heat, friction and occlusion, and when combined with moist environment from breathing, talking or sweating, this can cause breakouts, humid environment can trap bacteria inside touching your skin, this is where acne causing bacterias can thrive, as well as candida, also known as yeast infection, one way to avoid this issue is a gentle yet anti-bacterial cleanser with salicylic acid, preferably avoiding foaming cleansers, Cynthia recommends a gel cleanser instead, using a non-comedogenic oil control treatment that is suitable for oily to acne prone skin, applying a treatment that has oil balancing ingredients is key to keeping the skin's natural barrier and avoid stripping. As advised earlier, washing your mask daily is vital to keeping bacterias away, Cynthia, Founder here at Naava Skin Therapy & Master Esthetician, prefers disposable mask for this type of client, and if using disposable, it should be changed a few times throughout the day, so that the bacterias do not have a chance of forming, grow and congest the skin, but we know how costly this can be, so If using cloth mask, she recommends having a few on hand and change the mask as you go through your day. Washing with a mild, hypoallergenic detergent, avoiding anything with fragrance or chemicals, and using 100% cotton as mentioned before.

Makeup Use:

Wearing makeup can actually aggravate the situation, but if you have to, avoid applying makeup in the areas where the mask is covering, perfect time to showcase your lashes and flawless eyebrows, makeup tends to clog pores, so if you absolutely have to wear some, mineral foundation is most recommended, although it does not offer the full coverage as other heavier makeup, but it will allow your skin to breathe better.
